East Black Point Landcape Rehabilitation

Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Marin Headlands
Ongoing 2017-2021

Roth/LaMotte recently completed Design and Construction Observation on a 4-year rehabilitation of the historic gardens at East Black Point in San Francisco, which affords broad views of Aquatic Park, Alcatraz, and Downtown San Francisco. The gardens were a tangled web of invasive plants, collapsing pathways, and hazardous metal railings. The design of the rehabilitation strategy has been a team effort with the National Park Service, the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy, and our design team with Oberkamper and Associates, Miller Pacific Engineering. Roth/LaMotte led the design effort, helping to understand and strategize a multi-year effort at site stewardship changes, hardscape design improvements, and site lighting design by the Engineering Enterprise The design and implementation effort focused on engaging with the public, volunteers, grazing goats, and eliminating sunken steps and other modern-day building codes to ensure a safe experience. The overall effect was to open up the historic views of the bay and waterfront to the public and allow access for the first time to the general public.

The gardens are part of an ongoing volunteer effort to revitalize them and control the invasive weeds and trash. Volunteer info is here.
